Perth and Kinross communities face being cut off as region braces itself for heavy snow over the weekend

Communities in Perth and Kinross face being cut off while drivers could be left stranded as the region braces itself for heavy snow over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the region - the second highest alert level.

It will run from midnight on Friday, February 5, to 6pm on Saturday, February 6.

Residents are being warned to be prepared for "significant disruption to transport and utilities".

The Met Office says communities could be cut off for several days due to the snow, while interruptions are expected to power supplies and other services, such as gas, water, and telephone and mobile services.

Roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers.

Long delays on bus, rail and air travel could also occur.

A yellow warning is currently in place for much of the region for snow until 6pm on Thursday with a further weather warning comprising the whole region coming into force from 6pm on Thursday.

That will remain in place until Sunday at noon.
