Perth and Kinross ceremonies held to remember fallen World War heroes

The debt of gratitude to those who died in the two World Wars was kept at the forefront of minds young and old on Sunday, as Perthshire saluted the fallen.

Remembrance Sunday was marked in Perth at St John’s Kirk on November 14. Provost of Perth and Kinross Dennis Melloy, the Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Stephen Leckie and senior military representatives from the RAF, 7 SCOTS and Royal Navy laid wreaths during the service.

Due to coronavirus physical distancing requirements, numbers were restricted and by invitation only.

No military or civic parades were arranged this year for the same reason.

Provost Melloy said: “We owe our veterans and serving forces personnel a great debt of gratitude and each year we are proud to remember those who gave their lives in conflict to preserve our freedoms.”

Last week on Armistice Day, November 11, a number of Remembrance activities took place in Perth City Centre.

The Provost joined veterans, military representatives and members of the public and placed a wreath at the Association of Perth Veterans’ new TRI Service Memorial in St John Street.

Earlier that morning at 10am, the Provost and Lt Col Duncan MacKinnon, Commanding Officer of 7 SCOTS together with the Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Stephen Leckie, laid the traditional wreaths at the 51st Highland Memorial on the North Inch.

At 11am on Friday, November 12, Perth and Kinross Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Chris Ahern placed a wreath during the annual Pullars War Memorial Remembrance Day Service.

In Errol, where a memorial stone to Russian airmen has been placed outside the parish church, wreathes were laid by dignitaries on Thursday.
