Perth and Kinross candidates gear up for winter election

Campaigning for the general election gets underway across Perth and Kinross this week.

Both Luke Graham and Pete Wishart will be looking to retain their seats at the House of Commons when residents go to the polls on Thursday, December 12.

Mr Wishart has been a MP since 2001 and is the longest-standing SNP MP.

He will be up against two Perth and Kinross councillors for the Perth and North Perthshire seat.

Cllr Angus Forbes, who currently represents the Carse of Gowrie at Perth and Kinross Council, is to be the Conservative candidate for the constituency.

And Cllr Peter Barrett, who represents Perth City Centre, will once again stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate.

Currently, the Scottish Labour Party has not announced a candidate for this seat.

It had been claimed former councillor Elspeth Maclachlan was due to stand for the Scottish Green Party.

However, it is understood party members were still being balloted on this when we went to print yesterday.

At the last General Election in 2017, Mr Wishart only retained this seat by 21 votes.

Previously, he had enjoyed a majority of 10,000.

A row broke out on social media over the weekend on whether or not the Scottish Green Party should field a candidate for the Perth and North Perthshire seat.

Mr Wishart claims if he, as the SNP candidate, loses votes to the Greens, it will boost the Conservative vote. He posted on Twitter saying: “I have a majority of 21.

“The last time the Greens contested Perth and North Perthshire they got over 1000 votes.

“Our independence comrades know that they possibly can’t win here.”

Conservative Luke Graham will also be looking to get re-elected.

He won the Ochil and South Perthshire seat off the SNP’s Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh in the 2017 snap General Election.

Luke Graham will be up against John Nicolson for the SNP and Iliyan Stefanov for the Lib Dems.

Lorna Robertson will be the Labour candidate for the constituency – the seat had previously belonged to Labour from 2005 until 2015.

The Scottish Green Party has not announced whether or not it will field a candidate for the Ochil and South Perthshire seat.

Cllr Dave Doogan, who represents Perth City North at Perth and Kinross Council, will be standing as the SNP candidate for Angus.
