What makes a good leader in 2024? Is it nature, or is it nurture? This question has been a matter of ongoing debate for many years. Back in the mid-1800s, it was commonly believed that leaders were born with inherent traits and personal characteristics associated with leadership, and that only those who are naturally endowed could be effective leaders.
Thankfully, we now know this to not be the case. While it remains true that some people are gifted naturally with leadership qualities, it is indeed possible to observe and learn traits and behaviors and model them within your role, which leads to successful outcomes in your leadership career and within your workforce.
According to a 2015 Gallup study, only 10% of managers have natural talent—the perfect combination of traits to make them successful. This means that for the majority aspiring to be leaders or managers, acquiring and practicing good leadership qualities is key.
Qualities of a Good Leader
Confidence: Being confident as a leader means being comfortable in your skin, authentic, and inspiring trust in your leadership. It involves empowering your team and motivating them to excel.
Charisma: While extroverted energy is motivating, quiet charisma, leveraging introverted qualities like listening and empathy, can also be effective in leadership roles.
Resilience: Facing challenges and setbacks with resilience, strategic planning, and continuous improvement is crucial for sustained success as a leader.
Courage: Courageous leaders have clear goals, challenge the status quo, and inspire their teams to model positive workplace behavior.
Humility: Essential for growth and development, humility in leadership means self-awareness, accountability, and valuing the contributions of others.
These five personality traits—confidence, charisma, resilience, courage, and humility—can be learned over time, showcasing that successful leadership is a combination of both nature and nurture.
