Personalised jewellery: the new season ways to wear the alphabet jewellery trend

Ever since Sarah Jessica Parker rocked her beloved gold ‘Carrie’ nameplate necklace on Sex and the City, her character’s signature piece of jewellery has provided ongoing bling goals.

Nearly two decades later in 2016, the trend saw a major resurgence, with everyone from Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne to Kim Kardashian West, Kendall Jenner and even Kanye West rocking moniker necklaces.

Last summer, the trend for slinging our Christian names about our clavicle was replaced by the advent of a certain oversized gold bamboo-effect alphabet necklace.

The Celine initial necklace cost £245 (or £135 for the mini version) and was one of the final, and most affordable, #OldCeline items you could buy before Phoebe Philo left her post as the brand’s creative director.

As such, it became something of a badge of honour among ‘Philophiles’ (Philo’s army of devout fans, many of whom were distraught at the appointment of Hedi Slimane as her replacement) and influencers, and the standout jewellery trend of last summer. Now, the high street is awash with knock-offs, but getting your hands on an original is nigh-on impossible.

As such, we had all but forgotten the idea of an initial necklace until Meghan Markle hit Wimbledon earlier this month wearing a discreet 'A' necklace in honour of her newborn baby son, Archie.

And now we are feeling inspired once again to accessorise alphabetically.
