There was a strong emergency services presence in Merewether on Friday afternoon after a stray surfboard was spotted in the water and a person stuck on a sea ledge was winched to safety.

Emergency services including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to Merewether Beach just before 5pm after a surfboard was spotted, with fears had someone had fallen off it.

A large scale search was conducted but no person believed to be the owner of the board was found in the water.

While the chopper was in the area, they were alerted to a person who had become stuck on a ledge near the Anzac Walk.

The male was extracted from the ledge and taken to a safe location.
