Person who died after being struck by a train at Cramlington station was a 17-year-old boy

Police have confirmed that the person who died after being struck by a train in Cramlington was a 17-year-old boy.

Emergency crews attended the scene at Cramlington train station following reports that a person had been struck by a train just before 3pm on Monday. The British Transport Police have now confirmed that it was a 17-year-old boy sadly died.

They stated that further details about the boy will not be released due to the non-suspicious circumstances of his death.

While emergency services attended the scene, trains were cancelled, delayed by up to 40 minutes or revised. All lines between Newcastle and Morpeth were blocked as a result.

According to National Rail, there was disruption to CrossCountry, LNER, Lumo, Northern and TransPennine Express services.

A spokeswoman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 2.54pm following reports of a person who had been hit by a train at Cramlington Train Station. We dispatched three vehicles from the hazardous response team, a duty office, clinical team leader and a double crewed ambulance to the scene."

A spokesman for the British Transport Police later said that a person was sadly pronounced dead.

He said: "British Transport Police were called to Cramlington station at 2.53pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene."

The spokesperson added that the is not being treated as suspicious. "This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
