Person taken to hospital after two-vehicle crash which closed A1 near Morpeth

A patient has been taken to hospital after a serious crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle collision on the A1 southbound at around 11.48am on Thursday near Clifton, Morpeth. Police closed the road to traffic in both directions which caused mayhem for drivers in the area.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and treated two people with one later transported to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington for further care.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11:48am to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 southbound at Clifton, Morpeth.

"We dispatched one crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a double crewed ambulance. Two patients were treated at the scene and one person has been taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."

The A1 was closed in both directions between the A697 (Longhorsley turn off) and the Hebron turn off for around two hours. This affected traffic mainly heading between Morpeth and Alnwick.

A diversion was in place until the recovery of the vehicles involved could take place.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 11.50am today (Thursday) we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 just after the A697 turn-off near Morpeth.

"Emergency services attended and both drivers were treated at the scene. The road has since reopened."

A spokesman for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call from the ambulance service about this two-vehicle crash around 11.50am. Three appliances attended the scene. The fire service left at 1.15pm and the road has since reopened."

The A1 fully reopened to traffic at around 1.50pm.
