Person taken to hospital after falling from a footbridge on the A1

A person has been taken to hospital after falling from a footbridge over the A1 in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to the scene between near Kingston Park just after 2pm on Saturday afternoon following the incident on the northbound carriageway.

Police closed the road in both directions between Kenton Bar Roundabout and Kingston Park and Highways England issued diversion advice before the A1 could be reopened just after 3.30pm.

The person's condition is not known at this time.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call from a passer-by at around 2.24pm to reports that a person had fallen from a footbridge over the A1 between the junctions of Gosforth and Kingston Park.

“A specialist paramedic trauma car and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene and we have taken the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said they could not give any further information at this time.
