Huge search for 'person swept away by river' in Gloucester is called off

A huge search operation has been called off following reports a person was swept away by a river.

Police officers, fire fighters and airborne emergency service workers were looking for a person washed away in the River Severn in Gloucester.

At around 2pm the search was called off, Gloucestershire Live reported.

Incident commander PC Bobby George said: “We received a call that they’d been an object, an animal or a person seen in that stretch of water.

"We have searched the area and we are convinced that there’s no person in that stretch of water at this time.”

The search followed a period of heavy rain in Gloucestershire.

The Environment Agency updated a Flood Warning for the River Severn at Sandhurst and Maisemore on Monday morning, saying river levels on the River Severn were due to peak at 11am and between 11.15pm and 11.59pm.

Another Flood Warning - which means flooding is expected, take immediate action - is also in place for the Wye Estuary on the Forest of Dean border with Wales.

More rain is forecast for the area.

Lower level flood alerts have been issued for other spots along the River Severn, the River Wye in Herefordshire, the Severn estuary from Gloucester to Sharpness, and the Wye Estuary in Gloucestershire.

A four star Severn Bore rushed up the river this morning.

Surfers ride the Severn Bore - a natural tidal phenomenon

The natural phenomenon is caused when the rising-tide moves into the funnel-shaped Bristol Channel, forcing water to surge upstream in a wave.

It was predicted that waves could reach a height of 10.3 metres on the River Severn after dark yesterday and today.
