Person struck by train on rail line in East Ayrshire

A key Ayrshire railway line has been closed after a person was struck by a train today.

Emergency services are on the scene between New Cumnock and Dumfries with that stretch of line currently out of operation.

Disruption is expected to services between Glasgow Central and the Cumbrian city of Carlisle until later this afternoon.

Passengers have been directed to Stagecoach West Scotland bus services where a ticket acceptance scheme has been implemented.

In a tweet, operator ScotRail confirmed: "Sadly, a person has been struck by a train between New Cumnock and Dumfries. We've had to close the line while we work with the emergency services.

"To help keep you on the move, we have ticket acceptance in place with Stagecoach West."
