Person pulled from burning building after fire at sheltered accommodation

Firefighters rescued a person from a burning building after a fire started in sheltered accommodation.

Emergency Services were called to Sturgess Street, in Newton Le Willows, on Friday night after reports of a fire at 6.53pm.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene, where fire fighters battled a blaze on the ground floor.

The cause of the fire is not yet known at this stage.

Mersey Fire Service said as they arrived, one person was unaccounted for and four firefighters had to enter the building wearing breathing apparatus in search of them.

Fire crews were able to rescue one person quickly and pulled them from the building before they were given oxygen.

The person rescued was taken to hospital for further checks "as a precaution," the force said.

Mersey Fire Service said: "Firefighters rescued one occupant quickly and immediately requested the urgent attendance of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

"Fire crews administered oxygen to the casualty who was conscious and breathing. NWAS colleagues arrived quickly and began to treat the casualty.

"The fire was extinguished by 7.13PM and firefighters, still wearing breathing apparatus, began to ventilate the property, a further two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed to the flat immediately above to assess for any fire damage or spread.

"The casualty was taken to hospital for further checks as a precaution."
