Person killed after being hit by train near Airdrie station

A person has died after being tragically hit by a train between two Scots stations.

We told earlier today how emergency services had raced to the scene as services were disrupted between Airdrie and Shettleston in Glasgow' s East End early this morning.

Police have now confirmed the person was pronounced dead at the scene after the 6.44am incident despite the best efforts of paramedics.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said work was ongoing to identify the person and that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

She said: ‘British Transport Police were called to line near Airdrie at 6.44am this morning (10 August) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’

The line was reopened to commuters at around 8.17am.

National Rail tweeted: "Lines have reopened between Airdrie and Shettleston following the earlier incident where a person was hit by a train.

"Trains running between Bathgate and Glasgow Queen Street may still be cancelled, delayed or revised whilst service recovers."
