Person killed, 6 hurt in crash in Canaryville

May 07--A person was killed and six other people were injured after a four-car crash early Saturday morning in the Canaryville neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

At 1:12 a.m., a Mitsubishi was traveling east in the 700 block of West 47th Street when it drove through a red light, swerved into oncoming traffic and struck a Nissan Altima, causing a chain-reaction crash, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The Altima then hit a Nissan Armada, which in turn struck a Honda Civic.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, whose age was not immediately available, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sedevic said.

Six other people were taken to area hospitals.

The driver of the Altima and the three passengers inside were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The condition of the driver, a 26-year-old woman, was stabilized, and the passengers were all listed in fair condition, Sedevic said.

Two women, ages 48 and 61, who were passengers in the Armada were taken to St. Bernard Hospital. Both were listed in good condition, Sedevic said.

Two people, who were behind the wheel of the Armada and the Civic, refused medical attention, Sedvic said.

Early Saturday, a red SUV and two other mangled cars, one red and one silver, stood on 47th Street east of Halsted Street, cordoned off by police tape.
