Man dies after being struck by train at Scots railway station

A 47-year-old man has died after being hit by a train at a railway station in Fife, prompting local services to be halted and redirected.

Emergency services were called to Kinghorn Station, between Kirkcaldy and Burntisland on the southern edge of the Kingdom, shortly before 5pm on Thursday April 20. Despite the efforts of medics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland says it has begun making enquiries into the full circumstances of the tragic incident. Passengers on the affected train are understood to have been made to wait onboard the train for some time before being allowed to disembark.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.50pm on Thursday, 20 April, we received a report of a person struck by a train at Kinghorn Railway Station, Burntisland. Emergency services attended and a 47-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. The death is being treated as unexplained but it is not believed to be suspicious.”

Scotrail has suspended services in the area while enquiries into the death continue. Trains on the Fife Circle line have been suspended, with travellers able to use their tickets to travel on Stagecoach buses between Fife and Dundee.

Rail services that run through Fife via Dunfermline has not been affected. Passengers heading to and from Edinburgh are being asked to disembark at Inverkeithing, north of the Forth Rail Bridge.

The rail operator said on Twitter: "Sadly, a person has been struck by a train between Burntisland and Kirkcaldy. No trains are able to run between in the area while the emergency services respond.

"The line through Fife via Dunfermline isn't affected. We'll divert trains this way where we can."

The British Transport Police and the Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
