Person hit by train at Merseyrail station as emergency services rush to scene

A person was hit by a train at a Merseyrail station as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Paramedics and police were called to Birkenhead Park station shortly after 5pm on Friday to reports of the incident.

Services in the area were quickly suspended in the area to allow emergency services to deal with the collision.

Merseyrail tweeted updates throughout the evening to keep passengers updated on delays and cancellations.

A spokesperson for the rail operator said: "Due to a person being struck by a train at Birkenhead Park services on the New Brighton line are now suspended.

"Services on the West Kirby line are also suspended between Bidston and Hamilton Square."

Travellers also tweeted their thanks to train staff who evacuated them after the person was hit.

Emily Clarke said: "Thank you to your wonderful staff for evacuating us from our train & organising buses.

"They are so professional & kind despite the very distressing situation."

Services resumed to normal at around 9pm on Friday night and passengers were given advice about what to do if they had been affected by the incident.

Customers were told: "If you have been affected by this evenings incident you may be entitled to a refund or compensation.

"Please visit https://bit.ly/2A3pms9 for further information. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The transport service's Twitter account later tweeted out details of Samaritans for anyone who needed support.
