Person hit by Merseyrail train as services cancelled and delayed on a number of lines

A person was hit by a train as services remain cancelled and delayed throughout the night.

Emergency services were called to the Freshfield area on Tuesday evening after reports of the tragic incident.

As paramedics and police work at the scene, all Merseyrail services between Hall Road and Southport were suspended.

The 21.41, 22.11 and 22.26 services from Southport to Hunts Cross were cancelled with many others delayed.

Shortly before 11pm a rail replacement bus service started running from Hall Road and 23.00 from Southport.

Labour MP for the area, Bill Esterson, tweeted about the incident and paid tribute to the person involved.

He said: "So sorry to hear this. Terrible for the person killed, their loved ones and the driver. So sad.."

The death has not yet been confirmed by emergency services.
