A person has died after reportedly being hit by a train on the rail line between Airdrie and Shettleston during the early hours of this morning.
Police confirmed the person was pronounced dead at the scene after the horrifying incident, which took place at 6.44am, despite the best efforts of paramedics.
A British Transport Police spokeswoman said work was ongoing to identify the person and that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
She added: ‘British Transport Police were called to the line near Airdrie at 6.44am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are currently working to identify the person and inform their family.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The Airdrie to Shettleston line was reopened to commuters at around 8.17am, with National Rail Tweeting: “Lines have reopened following the earlier incident where a person was hit by a train.
"Trains running between Bathgate and Glasgow Queen Street may still be cancelled, delayed or revised whilst service recovers."
