Person found dead on railway track as emergency services rush to scene

A person was found dead on a railway track today, it has been confirmed.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to New Lane station in Burscough after they received reports at 1.42pm of a person on the tracks.

Video and photos of the scene show fire engines and an air ambulance attending the incident.

One eyewitness said they saw forensics officers also at the scene.

They told the ECHO : "The train stopped between New Lane and Causeway Lane.

"Forensics on the track and earlier helicopters and emergency crews."

A spokesperson for British Transport Police confirmed the person died at the scene.

They added that officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding their death.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers were called to New Lane station at 1.42pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances behind their death."

There were previous delays on the Northern railway service between Wigan Wallgate and Southport station, but services have returned back to normal.
