Person fined after travelling from Newport to Swansea to meet up with a friend

A person who drove to Swansea to meet a friend in a car park has been issued with a fine for breaching lockdown rules.

A tweet from South Wales Police on Sunday, January 10, said: "An individual has been issued with a fine after travelling from Newport to meet with a friend in a Swansea car park."

The meet-up was "not classed as an essential journey", they added.

Wales is currently at alert level 4, with heavy restrictions in place to curb people's movements - including only travelling when you have a "reasonable excuse" to do so and beginning exercise from your home.

However, not everyone is sticking to the regulations, including a couple who drove from a Tier 3 area in England on Christmas Day to "see the sunrise" on Snowdon and a minibus full of mixed households from Cheltenham which was turned round by police at Pen Y Fan.

South Wales Police stepped up patrols in Swansea Bay this weekend "ensuring people have not travelled to the area by car to undertake exercise", according to a tweet from the force on Sunday, January 11.

The marina area in SA1 saw an increased police presence with some car parks described as being "very busy" by the force. People in the area were being challenged over the purpose of their journey and whether it was essential.

It comes a week after officers issued 14 fines to people "travelling without necessity" in Mumbles last weekend, as well as two people from Bristol being fined after travelling to Gower "for a holiday."

South Wales Police asked people to "Please respect the rules that are put in place to keep all of us safe".
