Person dies on the tracks at Fellgate Metro station after emergency services called to casualty

A person has died on the Metro tracks near Fellgate Metro station, transport police have confirmed.

The British Transport Police were called to the line near Fellgate Metro station just before 3pm on Tuesday.

They had received reports of a casualty on the tracks, however, the person was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

Tyne and Wear Metro trains between Pelaw and South Hylton were halted just before 3pm during the emergency response. Services then resumed just before 5pm.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Fellgate Metro station at 2.51pm today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
