Person dies after being struck by train on Scots railway

A person has died after being struck by a train in East Lothian.

We previously told how rail services had been cancelled as a result of the emergency incident in which a person was hit by a train in the line between Prestonpans and Longniddry.

British Transport Police have now confirmed the person was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics were called at around 10.28pm yesterday evening.

Disruption continued through this morning with lines reopening around 8.40am.

We told how rail networks across the UK were affected with London North Eastern Railway also reporting a delay to services.

In an update, Scotrail said: “Emergency services have carried out their investigations and have now handed the line back. Normal working can now resume and services will now call at all stations to North Berwick and Dunbar.”

A BTP spokesperson said: “British Transport Police were called to the line near Longniddry at 10.28pm yesterday, September 5, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death.”
