Person dies after being hit by train on Midland Mainline

A person has died after being struck by a train on the Midland Mainline.

British Transport Police confirmed the death after attending reports of the collision at 3.51am on Monday, April 27.

Paramedics attended the scene near Loughborough station, however, the person was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Loughborough station at 3.51am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death.”

The Midland Mainline was closed for most of the morning following the collision, with trains unable to run between East Midlands Parkway near Castle Donington and Loughborough stations in Leicestershire.

East Midlands Railway, which is already running a reduced service due to coronavirus, said: "Unfortunately there has been a person hit by a train near Loughborough.

"This is between Loughborough and East Midlands Parkway and is disrupting our trains on the Sheffield/ London St Pancras route.

"At present, the emergency services and Network Rail are on site.

"Trains running through the area in both directions cannot run between Loughborough and East Midlands Parkway whilst investigations take place."

A spokesperson for Network Rail added in a tweet that travel disruption should be expected until "at least 10am" on Monday.
