Person dies after being hit by train near Whifflet station

Police have confirmed a person has tragically died after being hit by a train near Whifflet station.

Emergency services were called to the line shortly after 5.30pm yesterday following reports someone had been struck by a train between Coatbridge Central and Holytown.

Sadly, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson confirmed to Glasgow Live: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Whifflet railway station at 5.34pm yesterday (29/10) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and officers are working to identify the deceased and notify their next of kin."
