Person dies after being hit by train near Newark

A person has died after being hit by a train near Newark.

British Transport Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to lines near Newark at 6.53am on Wednesday morning (November 6).

Trains have been halted between Grantham and Newark North Gate since the incident.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the lines in Claypole at 6.53am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify them and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

It is the second death on the rail line in 24 hours, after a person died near Grantham just after 7.30am on Tuesday, November 5.

London North Eastern railway services have been affected by the incident.

Major disruption is expected between Peterborough and Doncaster until around 1.30pm.

A statement on the website said: "All lines between Peterborough and Doncaster have been reopened following a person having been hit by a train between Grantham and Newark North Gate earlier today.

"Services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised.

"We anticipate major disruption will continue until 13:30."
