Person dies after being hit by train at Lanarkshire station

A person has died this morning after being hit by a train at a Lanarkshire station.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at Uddingston rail station shortly before 6am after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene when police and paramedics arrived.

The incident caused disruption on local railway lines as commuters had to travel by other means while the Uddingston line was closed.

Travellers were urged to use their train tickets on buses.

The person's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Uddingston station at 5.54am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."

A statement from ScotRail read: "Due to emergency services dealing with an incident, services via Uddingston will be subject to delay and cancellation this morning.

"We are working closely with emergency services during this time and will keep you updated."

They later added: "Emergency services have completed necessary investigations and the line has now been reopened via Uddingston.

"We're working hard to get services running again as normal, however some alterations may continue whilst we get crew and units back into the correct position."
