A person has died after being hit by a train this morning.
British Transport Police have not yet confirmed whether the deceased was male or female, as enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
A spokesman for BTP confirmed there was an incident on the tracks at around 5.55am on Wednesday.
Officers were called out to the line near Runcorn, between Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe.
A British Transport Police spokesperson told the ECHO : "British Transport Police were called to the line near Runcorn at 5.55am today (27 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.
"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
The tragic incident triggered train disruption and cancellations.
National Rail confirmed: "A person has been hit by a train between Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe, resulting in all lines being blocked between these stations.
"Where possible, trains will be diverted, not calling at Warrington Bank Quay."
