A person has died after being hit by a train in Caerphilly on Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to Energlyn and Churchill Park station at around 7.30pm on Monday, January 3, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

British Transport Police said that "a person was pronounced dead at the scene". Officers confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Services between Penarth, Cardiff Central and Rhymney were disrupted after the incident between Aber and Energlyn.

No trains were able to run on the line for the remainder of the evening.

Jamie Pritchard, Caerphilly County Borough Councillor for Morgan Jones, said:  "I went to the station on Monday night to speak to local residents, the Police and the Ambulance Service.

"Local residents are in shock and thoughts are going out from the community".

Replacement buses were provided for passengers travelling between Cardiff and Rhymney on Monday night.

British Transport Police refused to say whether the person was male or female.
