Person dead after being hit by a train on North Lanarkshire railway line

A person has died after being hit by a train in North Lanarkshire earlier today.

The line between Caldercruix and Blackridge was closed around 3pm as British Transport Police rushed to the scene, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene and officers are not treating the death as suspicious.

Services through Queen Street Lower Level were suspended during the incident in both directions.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.01pm to Caldercruix station following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

"Officers are in the process of identifying the person and informing their next of kin."
