Two people were arrested after a fatal shooting in the parking lot of an Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services Facility in suburban Bridgeview — the first fatal shooting the western suburb has seen in nearly a year.

The duo was chased by police into suburban Palos Hills after one of them allegedly shot a person about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday outside the facility, at 7358 W. 87th St., according to an email from Bridgeview spokesman Ray Hanania.

The male victim was standing in line outside of the facility — which is located in a strip mall next to several businesses — when one person approached him and fired shots, according to Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker. No other customers or employees were injured.

He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead, Hanania said.

Police followed a car wanted in the attack into Palos Hills, where the two people inside allegedly abandoned the car near 99th Street and Roberts Road, Hanania said. They were arrested after a foot chase.

Hanania said the shooting was an isolated incident.

“It is a tragedy, but it is NOT a mass shooting similar to the unfortunate tragedies we have seen over the past few months across the country,” Hanania said in an email.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released the name of the victim.

The facility will reopen Thursday after they shut down operations following the shooting, Druker said.

No charges have been filed as of Wednesday evening.

The last reported homicide in Bridgeview happened nearly a year ago, when a 20-year-old man was fatally shot June 25, 2020, in the 7300 block of West 85th Place, according to data from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
