"Person-centred" approach to visiting loved ones introduced across NHS Ayrshire & Arran

A more “person-centred” approach to visiting patients has been introduced across all sites at NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

After “significant” visiting restrictions were put in place during the Covid pandemic, health chiefs are now in a position where they can employ a more flexible approach to visiting patients in their wards.

The changes came into effect earlier today.

Nurse director Jennifer Wilson said: “After significant visiting restrictions over the last two years, it is wonderful to now be at a point where we can introduce our new person-centred approach.

“We recognise the hugely important part family and friends can play in a patient’s healthcare journey and recovery.

“We believe that visiting should be considered a central part of patient care and that visits should be at a time that is convenient to both the patient and the visitor.

“We look forward to welcoming more visitors to our sites and want them to know that they are very welcome.

“If visitors and staff can work together with respect and kindness this will ensure the best visiting experience for everyone.”

Visitors are being asked to be mindful of the following guidance:

  • Visitors are welcome between the hours of 8am and 10pm, seven days a week.
  • Children are welcome – those under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • No more than two visitors each visit.
  • Visits should not last longer than one hour (unless previously agreed with the patient and staff).
  • Please avoid busier times where possible – such as early morning and mealtimes (unless assisting your loved one). Visitor access may be restricted during ward rounds due to patient confidentiality.
  • Visitors are asked to appreciate that there may be occasions when it is not possible to get immediate access to their loved one. However, delays will only happen when there is a valid reason.
  • All visiting arrangements will be discussed with the patient and their wishes will be respected at all times.

Those visiting NHS Ayrshire & Arran hospitals are once again able to use the facilities' dining rooms which had been closed to the public as a result of the pandemic.

Face masks must be worn at all times in a hospital setting but, when sat at a dining room table, they can be removed. People feeling unwell in any way or who have Covid symptoms should not visit.
