Person brought to safety from wrong side of Redheugh Bridge railings after two hours

Emergency services brought a person to safety after they were on the wrong side of Redheugh Bridge railings for two hours.

Police officers were first called to a person in need of help just before 10.30am on Saturday.

They then spent around two hours speaking to a person on the wrong side of the railings on the bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead.

Paramedics and firefighters with rope rescue equipment were also on the scene and were on stand by while negotiations were ongoing.

A lane heading southbound into Gateshead was blocked but traffic was not badly delayed.

Northumbria Police confirmed that the person had come down safely at around 12.30pm.

Emergency services have now left the scene.
