Shooter at El Paso Army hospital kills 1 victim; gunman also dead

Jan. 07--The person who caused a lockdown at an Army hospital in Texas shot and killed another person in the building, Maj. Gen. Stephen Twitty said Tuesday night.

The shooter is also dead, Twitty said.

The William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso was placed on lockdown about 3:10 p.m. local time, when it was reported a gunman was in the building, Twitty said.

Patients and staff were ordered to shelter in place as authorities responded.

No details were released about the victim, but earlier a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) said the victim was apparently a doctor.

Nearby Ft. Bliss was not locked down, base spokesman Gil Telles said.

O'Rourke, who has championed veterans issues, offered words of support to hospital staffers on his Twitter account.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women at the El Paso VA clinic," he wrote.

No other information was released. The investigation into the shooting is continuing, authorities said.

Times staff writer Matt Pearce contributed to this report.
