Person airlifted to hospital after being rescued from water off Cork coast

A person has been airlifted to hospital this afternoon after being rescued from the water off West Cork.

The diver got into difficulty 12 miles off the Seven Heads by the Lusitania wreck in West Cork at around 10am this morning.

The Courtmacsherry all weather Trent Class RNLI Lifeboat Frederick Stormy Cockburn was called out to help the rescue mission, Cork Beo reports.

The Lifeboat reached the person within 35 minutes and the diver was taken on board the Naval Vessel George Bernard Shaw and then airlifted by the Coastguard Rescue 116 onwards to Cork University Hospital.

The diver has since been airlifted to Galway University Hospital for further treatment.

The Lifeboat remained on scene as the other divers came to the surface.

At the moment it is unclear the condition of the diver - we hope to have updates later.

Straight away after the Lifeboat received another May Day call to a 30 ft yacht in difficulty off the Seven Heads coastline.

The Lifeboat has now reached this casualty and is preparing to take the stricken vessel in tow.
