'Persistent' man drove dangerously on stolen moped in police chase

A moped rider was lucky to escape serious injury when he drove dangerously along busy streets in a dramatic police chase. Kaine Chapman, who has never held a driving licence, was not prosecuted for stealing the Sinnis Hero 125 bike or for handling it, despite having driven it.

The 20-year-old, of Thorneywood Mount, Thorneywood, faced a raft of motoring offences stemming from his driving spree. It began in Oxclose Lane, Arnold, and ended at Madford Retail Park, Daybrook, on July 31, 2021.

As he was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, July 11, Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said Chapman had "tried to get away" from police. "That involved dangerous driving by you, even on a moped," the judge said.

"It was persistent and could well have resulted in injury, as well as to you. That it did not, is a matter of luck rather than anything else." Chapman pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis, driving without insurance or a licence, and failing to stop.

He received penalty points, a driving ban for 12 months, 25 rehabilitation activity days, 100 hours of unpaid word, and a two-year community order.
