Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas Faces Backlash Over Comments on AI-Driven Job Losses

Speaking on the All-In Podcast, Srinivas framed AI disruption as an opportunity rather than a threat, describing it as a pathway to a “glorious future.” He emphasized that emerging AI tools could empower individuals to build their own small businesses and become more self-reliant.

“The reality is most people don’t enjoy their jobs,” Srinivas said. “There’s suddenly a new possibility, a new opportunity, to use these tools, learn them, and start your own mini business.” He acknowledged that AI may lead to “temporary job displacement,” but maintained that the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term challenges.

However, his comments sparked widespread criticism on social media, where many users accused him of being out of touch with the struggles faced by workers dealing with layoffs and financial uncertainty. Critics argued that losing a stable income is not easily offset by the uncertain prospect of starting a business, especially for those living paycheck to paycheck.

One user on X criticized the remarks, pointing out the disconnect between wealthy tech leaders and everyday workers, particularly those supporting families. Others echoed similar concerns, noting that not everyone has the resources, skills, or safety net required to transition into entrepreneurship.

Some analysts also highlighted the broader debate among economists, who remain divided on whether AI is truly replacing jobs at scale or simply being used as justification for workforce reductions.

Despite the backlash, Srinivas’s perspective did find support among certain sections of the online community. Supporters argued that AI is lowering barriers to entry for entrepreneurship, enabling individuals to manage multiple aspects of a business—such as operations, marketing, and customer support—more efficiently than ever before.

“This shift could democratize entrepreneurship by reducing the cost and complexity of starting a business,” one user noted, while another pointed out that solo entrepreneurs are already leveraging AI tools to generate significant revenue.

In response to the criticism, a spokesperson for Perplexity highlighted data indicating a surge in new business applications in the United States since 2022. According to the company, around 16 million new business applications have been filed during this period, suggesting a revival in entrepreneurial activity.

The spokesperson added that technological advancements have historically disrupted existing industries while simultaneously creating new opportunities, reinforcing the idea that innovation tends to reshape—rather than eliminate—the job market.

The debate around Srinivas’s comments underscores a larger conversation about the impact of AI on employment, balancing optimism about future opportunities with concerns over present-day economic realities.
