Permission granted for new sports bar in Newport city centre

Permission has been granted for a new sports bar in Newport city centre.

The bar, which proposes to open from Wednesday to Sunday, will be based at former first floor offices in the Kingsway Centre, which are currently vacant.

Opening times will be from 5pm to 11pm on Wednesday to Friday, midday to 11pm on a Saturday, and midday to 10.30pm on a Sunday.

The bar is proposed by local businessman Lee Snook and will be based at 4-6 in the Kingsway.

Twenty-eight surrounding addresses were consulted over the plans, and no representations were received by Newport City Council.

The planning application states that no external changes are proposed, with minimal changes to the internal layout of the premises. There will be six pool tables within the bar area, as well as a “competition room”.

The council’s public protection manager had no objections to the proposal, but recommended controlled opening hours, and said the bar would have a “largely afternoon/evening use with the nearest residential properties approximately 46 metres from the site”.

Delivery vehicles will only be able to access the site via Emlyn Street, but the sports bar said it would not be served by large vehicles and would instead be picking up deliveries from a cash and carry.

The planning design and access statement reads: “The property is currently vacant and an opportunity exists to provide a suitable beneficial reuse through the provision of a leisure use to prevent it falling to disrepair, and a target for anti-social behaviour. Accordingly, it is advanced that the proposal will preserve the character and appearance of this part of the city centre.”
