Permission for Euro 2020 fan zone could be withdrawn if 'significant concerns' arise

All ticket holders for the Euro 2020 fan zone will be encouraged to take a covid test before attending the event.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf confirmed that it won’t be mandatory for anyone attending the events in Glasgow Green to take a test but an email with a link to order a free lateral flow test will be sent to ticket holders.

He added that permission for the event, which has been described as 'low risk', could be withdrawn at any time if "significant concerns" about the virus arise.

While testing isn't compulsory, attendees will be asked to fill out a test and protect form upon entering the venue at Glasgow Green.

Mr Yousaf said the fan zone will be a ‘family event’ with football pitches and tennis courts, adding that spectators will be seated during matches and that any food or drink will be available on table service only. No spirits will be served on match days.

The fan zone is currently set to open on June 11 and will be open for the duration of the 31-day tournament.

Speaking at the Scottish Parliament, Mr Yousaf said: "We're working closely with the Scottish FA, with Glasgow City Council, Police Scotland, and other partners on preparations for Euro 2020, including the four matches in Hampden Park and Glasgow Green fan zone.

"The situation with the virus will be continually reviewed in the run-up to and of course during the tournament, taking into account the latest scientific and clinical advice.

"In relation to the fan zone, I understand the concerns some have expressed, especially in light of the hard sacrifices everyone has made.

"The proposal for a fan zone is not about prioritising football over other priorities, it's about seeking to cater in as safe a way as possible for fans who want to watch the matches.

"However, I want to give assurance that these decisions are made carefully, with full account taken of clinical advice.

"In the case of the fan zone, it will provide an outdoor, highly-regulated space for fans to watch the tournament. We encourage everyone to make regular use of lateral flow device tests.

He added: "I want to make it clear that the situation with the virus, the application of necessary mitigations, and the actual experience of the event will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

"Any changes considered necessary, up to and including withdrawing permission should significant concerns arise."

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that fans watching matches inside Hampden Stadium will be able to take their own food with them.

Concession stands at the stadium will be closed to allow for physical distancing on the concourse. Discussions are ongoing between the FA and UEFA to reach an agreement on drinks, the First Minister said.
