New £1 million barriers are to be deployed in streets near Windsor Castle this summer as part of plans to protect the area from terror attacks involving vehicles.

Thames Valley Police is working with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to install the permanent Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures.

Temporary barriers were installed in the Berkshire town in March 2017 in response to the Westminster attacks.

Superintendent Colin Hudson, of Thames Valley Police, said: "We want people who live, work and visit Windsor to feel safe, and these measures will help ensure that this is the case."

Six locations have been identified, with designs created to fit in with the conservation status of each area.

Councillor Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and Windsor, said: "Keeping our residents safe is a top priority and these measures have been designed to ensure the safety of residents and those visiting Windsor.

"We are confident that the six designs fulfil that goal, while maintaining Windsor's unique heritage."

The barriers are to be installed in Sheet Street to the south of the entrance to Victoria Barracks; Victoria Street; Park Street; at the Castle Hotel in High Street; in Peascod Street and Thames Street.

Installation is set to begin in the summer 2019, with the Royal Borough funding £942,000 and Thames Valley Police committing £250,000.
