Permafrost is a moon-wrecking survival game that seems anything but chill

Permafrost appearing in FGS Live from GDC.

Upcoming survival-crafting game Permafrost just got a new trailer at the Future Games Show spring showcase, and when a promotional video starts with the moon itself being blown to smithereens, it certainly makes a statement. And when the world becomes swept in permanent apocalyptic winter moments later, that's just the very icy icing on the cake.

Put simply, Permafrost's unique angle is classic survival gameplay with the special twist of glacial temperatures and waist-high snow. In just the thirty second trailer shown off here, we see derelict skyscrapers encased in ice, howling blizzards, arctic forests and one very good boy dutifully following the player through thick and thin. Gotta have something worth living for in the end of the world, after all, and a dog will usually fit the bill nicely.

Beyond that, the gameplay we see in Permafrost seems to be leaning hard on the survivalist/crafting element, with overtones of the Forest, at least in my eyes. We see players constructing cabins to survive the cold, exploring ruined cities dripping with icicles, fending off snarling beasts with bows and firearms alike, and all this in the option to play solo or with friends in multiplayer.

Most importantly, while Permafrost's release window has only been narrowed to 2025 so far, players can check out the demo for it on Steam and try it with friends right now!
