Perjurer Tommy Sheridan to stand for new pro-independence party at Holyrood election

Convicted perjurer Tommy Sheridan is one of the lead candidates for a new pro-independence party at the Holyrood election.

The disgraced former MSP will stand on the Glasgow List for Action for Independence (AfI).

Blogger Craig Murray, who was this week found to be in contempt of court over Alex Salmond’s criminal trial, is the top candidate in Lothian.

AfI used to be called Alliance for Independence, but the outfit changed its name after discussions with the Electoral Commission.

Founded by former SNP MSP Dave Thompson, AfI aims to “max the Yes” vote in the Parliament.

They plan to back the SNP in constituencies, where Nicola Sturgeon’s party is predicted to be strong, but field candidates in the eight regions.

AfI’s list of candidates, released today, includes a series of highly controversial figures.

Sheridan, a former two term MSP for the Scottish Socialist Party between 1999 and 2007, was jailed for perjury in 2011 after a trial.

Murray, a former diplomat, was yesterday found to be in contempt of court after covering the Salmond trial on his blog.

The former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan attended two days of Mr Salmond’s trial in March 2020, sitting in the public gallery, and wrote about it on his website.

Less controversial is Thompson, a respected figure in the independence movement, who is AfI’s lead candidate in Highlands and Islands.

Sheridan’s sister Lynn has also been unveiled as the top candidate in Central Scotland.
