Period poverty vote: Scotland set to become the first country in the world with free sanitary items

Scotland looks set to make the history books tonight as MSPs vote to make period products free and easily accessible for people who menstruate.

The plan to stamp out period poverty for good led by Labour's Monica Lennon will reach its final stages tonight and if passed by the Scottish Government it will see period products readily available in schools, colleges, universities and local authority buildings.

It's been a long journey for the bill which was initially rejected by the SNP before senior government ministers made a u-turn and backed it.

It is expected to be pushed through tonight despite being the bill estimated to cost around £24.1 million, reports the Daily Record.

There were also fears that the move could encourage a cross-border raid as sanitary products would be free in Scotland but not England.

MSP Monica Lennon said: "We are in the final miles of a long journey and I am heartened by the support for the Period Products Bill. I am optimistic that we will complete that groundbreaking journey today.

"Scotland will not be the last country to make period poverty history – but it now has a chance to be the first."

It is hoped that by Scotland becoming the first country in the world to make period products a right, it will encourage others to follow suit.
