Perfume experts share best scent to wear on a first date to help you find love

First dates can be nerve-wracking with hopeful romantics arriving to their chose spot, wondering if their prospective partner will be the one - or even just like them.

Putting your best foot forward and hoping you get on with your date is the best most of us can do, while making sure we are flawless from head to toe.

Flawless doesn't just mean perfect hair and outfit, smelling good could make or break a date with scents sending subconscious signals.

An expert has revealed that by choosing the right perfume, you could evoke certain feelings and set the mood for your date before you have even uttered one word.

Natalia Ortiz, chief commercial officer at The Fragrance Shop shared her top tips for choosing the perfect first date scent to set that all important mood.

"On a first date, you want to smell as good as you look, without overpowering your suitor," said Natalia. "Florals are a safe bet as they are subtle, have mass appeal and tend to make people happy."

"Florals are particularly great for outdoor dates as they evoke a sense of fresh air combined with sweet-smelling blooms, such as jasmines, roses, orange blossoms. The payoff is sweet, romantic, and fresh - the perfect first date impression."

She recommends Maison Margiela's Replica Flower Market, which retails for £55 for a 30ml bottle of the eau de toilette, as it "captures the hustle and bustle of a flower market in a bottle".

As your relationship develops so should the fragrance you use, to portray a new mood. If you're on to date number two, try something a bit more musky.

Natalia recommends scents with "gourmand, spicy, or musky fragrances" as these are considered the "aphrodisiacs of fragrance". She added: "For a second date that's sure to send sparks flying, this is the scent for you."

"Its earthy, animalistic, carnal qualities balance perfectly with other notes, and it really lingers long after application which means even at the end of your date, you will still omit the fragrance to your partner," she explained.

"The smell of musk closely resembles that of testosterone, which means it is more likely to act as a pheromone."

This all hots up again for the third date winning scent of tuberose, which is "arguably the sexiest scent of all time", according to the fragrance expert.

"It may look like a beautiful, delicate flower, but Tuberose is one of the most subversive scents in the fragrance industry," she said. "It is heady, heavy, super sweet and incredibly full bodied.

"Like Jasmine, its alluring appeal comes down to the idoles, which give it a potent appeal. Indole is also produced in small amounts by our skin and released during lovemaking, which goes to explain why most people are attracted to the scent - it comes down to chemistry."

Finally, when you're ready to settle down and make the relationship official, Natalia suggests calming everything down with lavender based perfumes.

Natalia said: "When it comes to sealing the deal, it's all about comfort. Lavender has been shown to relax and de-stress the body, mind and senses.

"Lavender is also known as the 'herb of love,' and has been used as a scent to attract the opposite sex before bottled perfume even existed. It has typically been used in male scents, but in the past couple of years, we have seen a burst of lavender women's fragrances, which have a sexy and androgynous edge."

She recommends YSL Libre, which costs £65 for a 30ml eau de parfum, for Valentine's hopefuls wanting to seal the deal on February 14.

The fragrance is perfect for anyone, according to Natalia, due to it's "daring" use of traditional masculine and feminine scents to create a "distinctive, unisex appeal".
