Perez Hilton says Alec Baldwin 'not personally responsible' for cinematographer's death

Perez Hilton has spoken out about the accidental shooting on the set of Alec Baldwin's new movie.

It emerged overnight that the 63-year-old actor had shot a prop firearm that killed a woman and injured a man working on his new film Rust.

Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Thursday after gun shot wounds to the stomach.

The man injured is believed to be the director of the film, Joel Souza, who is said to have been hit in the shoulder.

GMB hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray invited Perez Hilton and Halyna's former colleague Adam Mortimer onto the ITV breakfast show to discuss the tragic incident.

As Adil, 47, described the shooting as a "devastating tragedy", Perez replied: "Yeah but it is not unheard of and unfortunately there has been accidents that have happened on film and television sets.

"Perhaps most well known is the late son of Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, who died in 1993 on the set of The Crow. That was an accident, this was an accident.

Perez appeared on Friday's Good Morning Britain alongside film director Adam Mortimer (ITV)

"And as you mentioned, this is a terrible tragedy and tragedies happen, but how we respond, that is just as shocking in that my job is to know what happens and to how people are responding to it."

Perez continued: "And right now on social media, people are making jokes of this and also attacking Alec Baldwin for this accident that happened. Alec Baldwin didn't murder anyone, Alec Baldwin isn't personally responsible for this woman's death, tragic as it is.

"You know, the film has suspended production indefinitely and everybody associated with it is traumatised and they will be providing counselling for everyone involved."

"In addition to my work as a blogger, I'm also an actor and a member of the Screen Actors' Guild and as a union member, I don't think that any actor should be holding a real gun anymore.

"This is just another reminder, I think, that reform is needed. It can be achieved in different ways to get something realistic on film or even rubber guns that look realistic on camera, we need to just change how things work going forward."

Good Morning Britain airs at 6am on ITV.
