Percat makes Walkinshaw Supercars return

Supercars driver Nick Percat is going back to where it all began, signing with Walkinshaw Andretti United for the 2022 championship campaign.

The 33-year-old has signed a multi-year deal with the former Holden factory team, joining fellow Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert in one of the most credentialed pairings on next year's grid.

It's a homecoming of sorts for South Australian Percat, who came through the ranks at Walkinshaw Racing and won the Bathurst 1000 as Garth Tander's co-driver in 2011 for the then-Holden Racing Team.

Percat debuted as a full-time driver with HRT in 2014 and would go on to finish third at Mt Panorama that year.

After two seasons with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, Percat joined Brad Jones Racing for the 2017 championship and has been with the Albury-based team since then.

In September he announced he was leaving BJR, just three months after signing a contract extension.

"I'd just moved up here to the Gold Coast and I was pacing around my apartment. I rang Brad and had the conversation with him. I said I wasn't exactly happy anymore," Percat told Motorsport.com after his shock decision to quit BJR.

"It was a surprise to both of us, but it was nothing personal against Brad or the team.

"Something just changed in my head and I wanted to act on it, so I told him."

The four-time Supercars race winner will form one of the strongest teams for the 2022 championship alongside Mostert - given Jamie Whincup's seat at Red Bull Ampol Racing is being taken by rookie Broc Feeney.

Mostert, the 2014 Bathurst champion, has been with Walkinshaw for two years and is fourth in this year's championship standings heading into this weekend's Sydney SuperNight event at Sydney Motorsport Park.
