Pepsi shades Coca-Cola in parody rebrand

Pepsi logo on a can.

Last month, Coca-Cola launched a brand overhaul, updating its iconic identity with a cohesive ecosystem that could perform across packaging, retail, and digital channels. As with all big brands debuting a new look, it made quite the fanfare over what was essentially a fancy facelift. So what did rival brand Pepsi do? They poked a little fun.

Taking to socials, Pepsi debuted a 'new' logo design in a subtly shady parody of Coca-Cola's dramatic new identity. While brand war marketing tactics tend to get a little stale after a while, Pepsi's quick-on-the-draw response to the Coca-Cola new global identity is the perfect silly spoof.

The video in question gives us a sneak peek at the goings on of Pepsi HQ at a mysterious "logo redesign meeting". First, the old logo is displayed for the room of yawning colleagues, as the jumpsuit-clad design team lambast its "old" appearance. The room explodes in cheers and applause as the 'new' design is revealed, which the design team admit is simply just the old logo. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," they claim.

Pepsi fans got in on the joke too, with one commenting, "It's like watching the Mona Lisa being created," while another added, "Pepsi, how are you gonna deal with this much change? The people aren’t going to like this massive difference in your logo; the brand will surely crash with this massive uprising of angry Pepsi fans…"
