Pepperdine basketball Coach Marty Wilson signs five-year contract extension

June 04--Marty Wilson has signed a five-year contract extension with Pepperdine that will keep him the coach of the Waves basketball team through the 2020-21 season.

The Waves reached the postseason for the first time since 2002 last season after finishing fourth in the West Coast Conference with a regular-season record of 18-14, including 10-8 in conference play. Pepperdine was eliminated in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational by Seattle.

Wilson's Waves held their opponents to 61.6 points per game, a conference low, by allowing West Coast teams to convert 41.3% of their field goal attempts and just 27% of their three-point shots last season.

"The culture that we have established on and off the court is something that I am really proud of," Wilson said in a statement. "We take great pride in recruiting young men that are eager to succeed on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Our staff will continue to work toward building Pepperdine basketball back into a championship program."

Pepperdine will have four returning seniors next season including leading scorer Stacey Davis (15.7 points per game) and Jett Raines (10.7).

Wilson began his basketball career as a player with the Waves from 1985 to 1989. After his playing days he joined the Pepperdine coaching staff as an assistant. He served as interim head coach for the final 13 games of the 1995-96 season. Pepperdine is 58-77 under Wilson.
