Pepper-sprayed man dies in police custody

A man allegedly armed with a knife has died after being pepper sprayed in regional Victoria. (AAP)

A Victorian man allegedly armed with a knife has died after being pepper sprayed by police.

Police say they attended a home at Robinvale in the state's northwest, near the NSW border, about 5.30pm on Sunday.

They were called to the property over reports a man was there who was wanted by police for a number of assaults and making threats.

When officers entered the backyard of the home, they were allegedly confronted by a 35-year-old man who was armed with a knife.

He was pepper sprayed by police and taken into custody before becoming unresponsive.

Police called for medical assistance and performed CPR, but he could not be revived.

Detectives from Victoria Police's homicide squad will investigate the death, with oversight from the professional standards command.
