Peperami launch veggie version of lunchbox staple - but not everyone is happy

Peperami sticks have long been a staple in children’s - and adult’s - lunch boxes ever since they were launched in 1979. But now, more than 40 years on, vegetarians can enjoy a version of the much-loved snack, too.

The brand have released a three pack of ‘Vegerami’ sticks, following the success of the brands Vegerami Chick’nless Bites. But not everyone is happy with the announcement.

The meat-free treat is suitable for vegetarians and flexitarians and are said to have been a ‘long-awaited release from hungry fans’ across the UK, according to Peperami.

The Vegerami sticks have been developed over a number of years to ensure a similar taste and texture to the original Peperami sticks, made with pea and wheat protein rather than meat.

Peperami said: “With many Brits growing up with Peperami in their childhood, this big step will give those munching on meat-free Monday, at lunchtime or during the afternoon, a chance to enjoy another juicy snack to satisfy their cravings.

“Perfect for snackers wanting to cut down on their meat intake, Vegerami offers a convenient option for when hunger strikes. And to tantalise taste buds, each stick contains punchy peppery herbs and spices within each bite.”

High in protein but low in calories, weighing in at 64 calories per stick, the Vegerami sticks are available in Tesco from today (May 9), and will later be rolling out to other supermarkets, priced at £1.50 for three.

But since making the announcement on social media this morning, Peperami fans don’t seem thrilled about the meatless option.

One wrote: “No one needs, wants or asked for this.” while another shopper added: “April fools day was ages ago.”

A third customer suggested Peperami ‘get rid of it’, but the brand responded: “Don't knock it till you've tried it!”
