Pepe bemoans 'unfair' Liverpool defeat - but shares respect for Jurgen Klopp's side after Champions League exit

Pepe has bemoaned FC Porto's Champions League exit to Liverpool, complaining that the Reds' victory was unfair.

Having won the first leg 2-0 at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp 's side started slowly in Portugal before Sadio Mane 's eventual VAR-assisted goal put the tie beyond the reigning Primeira Liga champions' reach.

Second half goals from Mohamed Salah , Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk gave the scoreline an emphatic look on the night, despite Eder Militao's consolation, as Liverpool stormed to a 4-1 victory .

The Reds won 5-0 on their previous visit to the Estadio do Dragao back on their run to last year's Champions League Final, and on paper claimed another emphatic win over the Portuguese giants to set up a semi-final meeting with FC Barcelona.

But Porto were wasteful in front of goal, recording 19 shots on goal compared to Liverpool's 13 with 14 of those coming in the opening 25 minutes before the Reds had even troubled Iker Casillas.

Virgil van Dijk's secret skill, why Liverpool fans celebrated Porto goal and other moments missed

A three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Pepe took encouragement from Porto's performance but was left ruing his side's lack of prolificness in front of goal as he labelled their defeat 'unfair'.

"The team started the first half well and I think it was unfair," he said after the game. "(Liverpool) attacked once and scored a goal.

"In the first half we were one hundred percent better (than in the first leg).

"All the players at this club have the objective to win the Champions League.

"We were in such a beautiful race and it was not impossible (to win) today, we showed our ability against such a difficult opponent."
